Well I have recently had the opporchancity to start feeding and observin the birdies at ma new gaff in bumpkinland  Smile.

I don't know much aboot birds - but I do know the bluddy blue tits are makin a hell of a mess by pickin oot the sunflower seeds out of the bird feeder - and only the sunflower seeds - and flingin them away.

Is it cos they don't like sunflower seeds? Or are they too big for such wee birds?

Sunflower seeds everywhere...nothin else is touchin them.

Ah wiz quotin' fae a pamphlet entitled Great Queensland Sausage Burning Tit Care for Beginners. It advises feeding sunflowers seeds.

Ye'll find the feeding advice in the section after the bit that suggests leaving a rubber tit lying aboot the place so that yer new wee pet'll thibk its foond a friend and'll no' get lonely.

I checked this today. It's definitely whole seeds - outer and inner complete -  that are bein left scattered about. And it's definitely the tits to blame!

What have you got them in? If it's one of those wire or cage feeders, a lot will simply spill out.

Akshly, cumtae think o' it, maybes they're jist no' in the mood o' sunfloor seeds right the noo. They seem tae be devourin' ra suet rather than the nuts at the moment.

Trubble is, when ye pit oot things like suet and mealwurms (which is baith better fur thur weans than nuts) ye get flocks o' starlings comin' in late efternane and eatin' ye oot o' hoose and hame.

Feed the birds.
Tuppence an bag.....

As ye well know young tattie, ah um the inventin sort.   Apart from the monofilament fishin line solution to the squurrel problem, ah noticed that the wee burds wur awfy careless - playing wi thur food, scatterin it aboot good style.   So ah inventit plant-pot saucer attachments fixed to the bottom of the feeders tae catch the throwaway seeds.   Then ah found ye could buy said invention in Dobbies.   Mind you, throwaway seeds don't go tae waste if ye hiv groundfeeders as well, like blackburds.

Anywey, the burds ur a bit fussy at the moment - cos some of thum ur bringing up weans.   Black sunflower seeds ur usually oan the menu but whit they need at the moment is protein.   Get a tub o' dried mealworms.

Ye'll be aware that the Mustress Too and masell jined whit a thoat wiz the Royal Society for the Prevention o Burds?

As you well know, I am not the inventin sort. (no in a practical sense anyway. In talkin maself intae what end up as vexatious situations, aye....) How wid ye go about fixin said plantpot saucer attachments to yir feeder...?

*urk* Nope. Went to the RSPB shop, saw the tubs and wis nearly sick. I'm no touchin them.

So it's nuts tae the lot o thum! They do seem to be getting through plenty of peanuts in the other feeder, and no waste there.

I thought this was the gardening thread.
Birds; non PC seeds what next?

Can we not have a discussion on the finer points of recycling & compost?

My burning passion is for the tidy redistribution of all waste.

My palms itch when I see good composting material just standing about going to waste.
Every living thing needs food.

I love feeding all natures wee living things.
Just not too chuffed with the 2 legged variety but then nothing is useless--------- Razz

I'll pass the Kelpie seal of approval as I have the following:-
one council green waste bin for the stuff that I don't want to put into my composters
two compost bins, one nearly ready to empty the compost out of and one on the go
two bokashi bins by the back door for all other kitchen waste such as plate scrapings  that don't go on the bird table or into the cats.
most other stuff is recycled or passed onto charity shops.

I can bamboozle the family by talking about brown and green waste and C/N ratios and they think I'm odd when I say that the compost is smelling good.

Tamatas.

Embdy know anythin aboot tamatas?

See if ye get a particularly smashing lot of wee cherry tamatas from the fruit and veg shop  Cool , can ye save the seeds from them and grow yer own?

How long can the seeds be kept for before sowing?

<still with the old proper Beechgrove Garden mandolin-y theme tune in ma heid>
