Thanks Senga - I think that's the kinna thing I may be lookin for. Will investigate.

If this partikler mannie of my unwilling acquaintance gets a gong, then.. then... then I'm the queen of bloody Sheba.

He's an ungallant, ungracious, intemperate, puerile bam of the first wattir.

He's a hacademic.

Scholar he may be.... as a man he's a f*ckin wanker who doesnae know the meaning of civility.

(In common of course with most senior male hacademics I have met - but this wan takes the biscuit)

Shocked

Artoo is a Henchineer anna chentleman in ma book, before he's any kinna Hacademic.

The Hacademics of ma acquaintance are mainly among the arts & humanities, i.e. folk who in the real world cannae find their arse wi an atlas, and I'm gettin sick to death of their fushonlessness allthegither.

That this particular eejit is gettin gonged for being no kind of gentleman at all is a right scunner so it is.

It was the Cabinet Office I had to contact when I received a letter saying "Thank you for your letter to the Queen regarding the nomination of x for a gong". Thing was, I knew I hadn't written any such letter. Someone had forged my signature. They were very helpful when I rang them and explained. I wouldn't have minded quite so much but the original letter had a spelling mistake and that upset me more than anything else!

You usually find gongs are awarded just before retirement to most people. There must be at least a six month lead in once a nomination has been made, which must be accompanied by at least two letters of support. There is usually a system of discrete enquiry to find out if the reasons for giving the gong are justified. Academics will probably be judged on how much money they've raised for their institution, how many books and articles they've published and whether they've done any groundbreaking research. Whether they're a good teacher or all-round wonderful human being is another matter.

The nominee is also asked if they want it
