The pipes faa silent

Bill Millin, faa piped the Scots ashore during the D Day landins huz deid, aged 88.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Millin

Quote:
“When I finished, Lovat asked for another tune,” Mr Millin said. "Well, when I looked round - the noise and people lying about shouting and the smoke, the crump of mortars, I said to myself, ‘Well, you must be joking, surely’.

“He [Lovat] said, ‘Would you mind giving us a tune?’ ‘Well, what tune would you like, sir?’ ‘How about The Road To The Isles?’ ‘Would you want me to walk up and down, sir?’ ‘Yes, that would be nice - walk up and down’.”
Celyn

My old Scottish boss in Glasgow was with the  airborne at Pegasus Bridge in Normandy on D-Day (he was with the advance party that  laid the tapes for the gliders to land) .

After about 6 hours hard fighting there was a lull and he heard in the distance the bag pipes.  The germans melted away.  He saw walking  up the middle of the road Lord Lovat and his piper all alone. On either side of the road he saw the green berets of the Commandos bobbing up and down as they worked their way along the ditches
Sgriob

Ah did read that it was Millin himself whit played the pipes for "The Longest Day" .... only it was Black Bear, no Road Tae the Isles.

Ah still think it's fucking weird that Peter Lawford got to play auld Shimi in the movie.
Heidy

Has sumwan left a bag o peanuts oot? Thats aboot ra ainlie thing whit wid get the skwirril oota bed............ Rolling Eyes

Like Ah wance said: "As lang as there is injustice, whinivver a Targathian bairn cries oot, whirivver a distress signal soonds amang the stars, Ah'll be there."

The bickerin an gurnin in this threid pits it in the Targathian rug rat category.

Ah wiz tryin tae gie it a wee haun is aw. Neil's shenshibilities dae him credit.
