Akshly, cumtae think o' it, maybes they're jist no' in the mood o' sunfloor seeds right the noo. They seem tae be devourin' ra suet rather than the nuts at the moment.

As ye well know young tattie, ah um the inventin sort.   Apart from the monofilament fishin line solution to the squurrel problem, ah noticed that the wee burds wur awfy careless - playing wi thur food, scatterin it aboot good style.   So ah inventit plant-pot saucer attachments fixed to the bottom of the feeders tae catch the throwaway seeds.   Then ah found ye could buy said invention in Dobbies.   Mind you, throwaway seeds don't go tae waste if ye hiv groundfeeders as well, like blackburds.

Can we not have a discussion on the finer points of recycling & compost?

Every living thing needs food.

I love feeding all natures wee living things.
Just not too chuffed with the 2 legged variety but then nothing is useless--------- Razz

I'll pass the Kelpie seal of approval as I have the following:-
one council green waste bin for the stuff that I don't want to put into my composters
two compost bins, one nearly ready to empty the compost out of and one on the go
two bokashi bins by the back door for all other kitchen waste such as plate scrapings  that don't go on the bird table or into the cats.
most other stuff is recycled or passed onto charity shops.

I can bamboozle the family by talking about brown and green waste and C/N ratios and they think I'm odd when I say that the compost is smelling good.

gairdnin thread/Heidy:

On Saving Seeds:
Those posts aboot saving seeds recalled my own attempts at growing from scratch. At the close of summer, a few years back, we had saved enough seeds to start us off for the following year. Our seeds were wrapped in paper towel, not sure if it was advanced tae the level of non contaminants which Fey has mentioned, but it was, at least, un-used.
The following year, possibly in the early part of March, my noble experiment began. We buy our eggs by the flat and were assured that the eggs cartons were just the ticket for seeds to start sprouting. Also bought a zillion of those wee bio-degradable, peat moss starter pots. Black earth and organic manure were to be used as the womb.
My basement is dry and wooden skid was brought in to keep all of my tiny planters off the flair. Peat moss pots and egg containers were filled with a mixture of soil and manure; seeds were added and water, not too cold, was sprinkled, lovingly, on our future crop(s).
A week or so later I needed to make a few adjustments. Some of thais stupid wee peat moss pots would separate at the bottom; this because of the watering. Nae worries because wee still had hauf a zillion, someplace. Eureka....mind ay didnae find them mahsel.
My next batch were placed on a plank. The plank was five feet long, ten inches across and three quarters of an inch, thick. Kept all of my planters tight the gither soas they wid support each other; weel ye ken fine that ye cannae stop the water supply.
By the end of March, mibee early April, am carrying my plank ootside oan a daily basis; wur still getting cold nights so am being awfy careful. Many, but no aw, of the planters are displaying GREENERY, so wur being successful.
Am oan line and I am keeping an eye oan the weather. Forecast says clear, dry, nae wind and a low of forty; am gonnae be leaving the wee darlings oot for the entire night. Am telt: that's a mess, doon thair, ay hope ye are gonnae be picking stuff up and putting things away....ay right....."oh yes dearest, whatever yur wee hert desires".
Am oot the door and dae a last scrutiny of the chosen spot, my very ain garden of Eden....Capitol "E" in case a naked lady should wander by. Back tae get my plank and I pick it up, go tae turn towards the steps and step oan something, fall backwards and witness my plank free fall. Said a few, oh dears, had a cup of tea, smoked a few ciggies and an hour later returned to the basement to survey a heartbreaking scene.
"Right", ay says, and started the rescue. I turned another section of the garden and planted all that I could. Wasn't sure what was what but there were a few, tomatoes, green pepers, sunflowers, peas (which hadn't broken the surface) carrots, green onions, pumkins and etc. What i cuidnae pick up was relegated tae the composter.
A good number of those in the garden, did grow. The composter could have kept the neighbourhood in tomatoes and green peppers for a long time.

Her man says, "sharing, it's an arrangement we should consider" and awa they went, her jist chortling.
Oanyway, the grass whip, and this bit wull be quite useful. When ye buy one it will come with a full spool or the man in the store wull load it fer ye. If ye use it as the manufacturer intended, the spool wull last a long time.
When new, a wee dunt oan the grun wull advance the plastic thit does the cutting., Some idjits experiment, ken like, lets gie it a few dunts and see how much a foot of plastic cord wull mow doon. Or, let's try and wrap the cord aroond the handle of a shovel.
Eventually the childishnes stops. Of course by that time you are needing mair of the plastic twine. It comes in fifty foot lengths and ye are told that it is dead easy tae install: thon last bit comes from every lying bastirt that ye know.
I did buy a fifty foot roll and tried tae attach it as per instructions. At that time folk in this house wur talking tae me, maistly in a civil manner but even so ay wasnae aboot tae tell them that ay was utterly failing in my attempts tae mak the grass whip useful.
Waiting until they are gone oot, ay take the spool and grass whip, return tae Canadian Tire and meet Keith, the magic man. Keith wisnae the maist jovial of clerks but he did sometimes smile when I explained my problems. Am hame in nae time and I have paid attention tae what he did.
A year later am nae longer gardening, the job being commandeered by another. She quits this year and, widn't ye know it, the grass whip spool is bloody empty. Ay cannae mind what Keith said but the instuctions are oan the plastic cover that goes over the spool. Furst step. "push the plastic cord through the eyelet on the fan housing, make sure to align with notch". Noo if ye follow thais instructions ye cannae push mair than an inch of cord through the eyelet before it jambs against the wee wheel it is supposed tae wrap aroond.
So, what ye need tae dae is cut off ten feet of plastic cord, wrap it aroond the spool, feed three inches through the eyelet and force the bloody thing the gither.
Dinnae bother trying tae get mair cord by dunting it and when ye get it caught and unravelled, cut the cord and start again. Fifty feet should last until the lawn, nae bigger than four hundred square feet, has been whipped. Am no quite finished mine but am awa tae Canadian tire. Keith has retired but am gonnae be prayin that his replacement might be of some use.
Noo, the chances are that am gonnae be buyin a new grass whip, one that is ready for W***...now this is where I tell ye something useful.......either marry a handiwoman or get a 5.9% Canadian Tire credit card.
