Addiction

I aye assumed that, whatever yer addiction micht be - booze, baccy, illegal stuff - stopping (or being made tae stop) wuild be guid fer ye.

A wee whiles back, Ah wiz talkin' tae somewan aboot his younger brither whit is seriously alcoholic. He's so bad that he has to carry a card warning that he must not be deprived of alcohol in any circumstances. That's so that, if he winds-up in police cells or in hospital, ra polis or ra doacturs wull phone a certain place fur instructions.

He even gets additional benefits so that he can buy booze. (No, Ah didnae believe that bit at furst either, but Ah've checked and, I assure yiz, it is indeed possible to get such additional benefits tae buy booze, if yer far enough gone.)

But here's mah question. If this poor bugger wiz tae be deprived o' booze in some mental hospital or sumthin'. whit wuild happen tae him? He'd get DT's for sure, but they'd pass (Ah think). But, is it possible tae get so addicted tae something that stoppin' wuild herm or even kill ye?

The saddest bit aboot thon is that it sounds like ra pare wummin wis makin' a - possibly heroic, wuildnae be too strong a adjective - effort tae sort hursel' oot, but wisnae gettin' the richt or enough support.

But mah question remains unanswered. If she wiz in the richt place and gettin' help so ra backoots wuildnae result in her injurin' hursel', wuild suddenly stoapin' hae done her any lastin' herm?

From my understanding Dosser; there are those with a weak heart that withdrawal  from drugs or alcohol can kill.
They have to be weaned under strict medical supervision & not even that always works.
These people are one in several million, but like the one who dies the first time they take alcohol, they exist.

She hud plenty of support frae family and freends alike, but she wisnae interestit, blakkoots wurra culminashun of aboot 20 years bevvyin

Real shame as she hud everythin goin fur her, bonny lookin wummin tae

Main problem with sudden withdrawal of the type you are talking about is fits. Full blown epileptic type fits, and what happens is that you overheat and cook your brain, or like Fey says, your heart gives out. However it is entirely possible for people in that position to undergo a supervised medical detox, usually using librium but diazepam also works alongside vit B replacements. The problem is afterwards maintaining sobriety - most of the medical facilities aren't good at putting in place the necessary things. Shame, it would save a lot of money and heartache, not to mention lives. If they were actually interested in recovery and steered patients towards it then many of the excuses would start to slip away - the person you mentioned will likely never get clean and sober because they now feel justified in continuing.

I am in discussions with an MSP about what we can do to increase the drive towards recovery rather than babysitting the disasters. You don't want to know the stuff I've seen in Cornton Vale. One of the big problems is that lots of people think they know about addiction. They don't.
