Us banjoists, and wannabee banjoists, don't need no steenking air banjoists.
Bluegrass banjo players use a thumb and two fingers and keep the plucking hand rock steady ... any extra movement kin only slow the mad bastirts doon by a nano-second or two, which they hate.
Clawhammer players use only a thumb and wan finger. The plucking/frailing hand moves only with downward strokes, sometimes at a helluva lick, but always within a very confined space in order tae keep the speed up.

Baith occupations ur mutually beneficial. The auld RSI is, of course, a fluffer's nitemerr. Witness mah recent appearance in the High Court - Merkin v Wanquer Fillums. Ah wiz tryin' tae sue mah erstwhile employers fur injuries recieved in the commission o' wan o' therr mair energetic adult fillums but Ah came a cropper, due tae an narrow minded judge, when Ah wiz jiled fur demonstrating, wi' the help o' the Clerk of the Court, the particular wrist action thit Ah believe, caused mah carpark tunnel.
Thirty days fur tryin' tae get justice! Outrageous.

brw Clawhammer banjo players don't play any notes on the upward hand movement.

So they're simplex players, nae duplex?

Surely they'd play gey near twice as fast if they played notes on baith strokes.

Therr's many a nice tune buggered up by bein' pleyed too fast. Maist clawhammer tunes ur pleyed at a moderate, sometimes slow, pace. Dwight Diller is noted fur his slow hypnotic style of playing.
Here's a wee tune played a wee bit too quickly but still nice; any faster would ruin it.
